The Power of Reiju: Returning to the Heart of Reiki

When people speak about Reiki training, receiving an attunement is often mentioned, a moment when something is given so that Reiki can be practised.

In the original Usui system, Reiki was understood differently.

Woven into the heart of Reiki, is Reiju, a subtle, sacred empowerment that reconnects us with the natural flow of energy already present within us.

It is not something added or given, but something gently remembered.

What is Reiju?

Reiju is often translated as spiritual blessing or empowerment.

Rather than a one-time experience, it was traditionally offered to students regularly, allowing their connection with Reiki to deepen slowly and organically over time.

Reiki, in this way, is not something we “learn” and then use.

It is a relationship. One that unfolds through presence, practice, and humility.

The Roots of Reiju

Reiju has its origins in Japanese esoteric Buddhist practice, where spiritual transmission was shared through presence, ritual, and devotion rather than instruction alone.

Mikao Usui’s Reiki was never just a healing modality.

It was a spiritual path — rooted in mindfulness, ethical living, and the quiet cultivation of awareness.

Reiju reflects this lineage. It invites us not to strive, but to soften.

Reiju and the Western Understanding of Attunement

As Reiki travelled to the West, the system adapted. Attunements became more structured and often received once at each level.

Reiju offers something gentler.

Rather than activating Reiki, it supports the clearing and strengthening of an existing connection.

Rather than marking achievement, it supports ongoing return, again and again to presence.

What Reiju Offers

Reiju works quietly and uniquely for each person. It may support:

• a deepening of sensitivity and awareness

• a clearer, steadier flow of Reiki

• emotional and energetic integration

• a sense of grounding, trust, and inner stillness

Some people feel sensations; others simply notice a softening over time.

There is no right experience, only your own.

A Practice of Remembering

Reiju reminds us that Reiki is not about becoming something more.

It is about remembering what is already whole.

I have always offered Reiju in this original spirit, as a gentle, grounding support for those beginning and continuing their Reiki journey.

If you feel drawn to Reiki, trust that inner calling.

The path often begins not with certainty, but with listening.
